Champaign-Urbana Illinois Gets Soaked

Heavy rains fell over Champaign-Urbana, Illinois on Saturday with more rain early Sunday morning. The two-day total through Sunday morning was 4.42 inches at the official NWS COOP station at the Illinois State Water Survey near the corner of First and Windsor in Champaign. Here is the breakdown by day, with the official observation time at 8 am:

  • 0.09 inches of rain by 8 am July 12
  • 4.33 inches of rain by 8 am July 13

The 4.33 inches for July 13, 2014, at the official, long-term site for Champaign-Urbana, falls short of the historical record 1-day total, which is 5.32 inches of rain from August 12, 1993.

Here are the reports from the CoCoRaHS network for Champaign-Urbana, showing two reports of over 5 inches, and several reports of between 4 and 5 inches.

Here is a wider view showing the rains of the last two days from a NWS product that combines radar and rain gage information. The amounts of 2.5 to 4 inches stretches from Chicago down to east-central Illinois with the heaviest amounts of possibly up to 6 inches in Champaign, Piatt, McLean, and Ford counties.

Champaign-Urbana Winter Weather Stats

Below is a summary of the February and winter weather statistics for Champaign-Urbana:

February

  • The average temperature for February was 19.0 degrees, which was 9.9 degrees below average and the 9th coldest on record.
  • The total snowfall for February was 14.6 inches, which was 8.8 inches above average and the 10th snowiest on record.

Winter

  • The average temperature for the three core winter months of December, January, and February, was 21.6 degrees, which was 8.6 degrees below average and the 9th coldest on average.
  • Our seasonal snowfall total that goes all the way back to November, was 41.1 inches as of March 3. That makes it the 7th snowiest seasonal total on record and 17.9 inches above the seasonal average of 23.2 inches.

It was certainly a cold and snowy winter but it was hard to beat those winters in the late 1970s and early 1980s. For example, the winter of 1977-78 experienced the most snow in Champaign-Urbana history with 67.2 inches. It was also the coldest during the December-February period at 20.2 degrees.

Champaign-Urbana Hit 101 Today

We officially hit 101 degrees today here in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, according to the long-term site at the Illinois State Water Survey. That’s the warmest we have been since August 18, 1988. However, it does not beat the record for this date, which was 104 degrees set in 1901.

Record December Snowfall: Champaign-Urbana

Champaign-Urbana set a record for their heaviest December snowfall total on record. The 20.4 inches of snow that has fallen so far in December surpassed the old record of 19.1 inches set in 1983.
The 5.0 inches of snow on Christmas Day clinched the December snowfall record. By the way, it was also the biggest snowfall on record for that date. It surpassed the old record of 3.8 inches that fell on December 25, 1944.
We have had measurable snow on the ground since December 4.
It has been persistently cold as well. The average temperature for December through the 27 is 21.3 degrees, the ninth coldest December on record. The forecast is for milder temperatures for the rest of the month so this December may slip a little in the rankings. Oddly, we only dropped below zero once, on December 9 with -1°F.

What happened to the rest of the 1983-84 winter? The snowfall total for January was  only 5.6 inches. However, the heavy snow returned in February with 11.6 inches and 8.4 inches in March. Combined with the 0.2 inches that fell in November 1983, that winter season ended up with 44.9 inches.
